This Guide Covers Above-Ground Pools Only

Everything below is for above-ground pools: the liner, the frame, and any deck built around it.

Inground and gunite pools are a different job. Removing one usually means breaking out concrete and backfilling, which is typically contractor-led demolition work rather than a weekend DIY project. If that’s your situation, see our demolition service.

Step 1: Get the Container Sized

There’s no single right answer for an above-ground pool — a small round pool with no decking is a different job than a large oval with a built-out deck. Size depends on the pool’s diameter and whether decking comes out with it. Tell us both before you book and we’ll match the container. Compare every container on our dumpster sizes page.

Step 2: Cut the Power First

Before you touch the pump or filter, turn off power to the pool equipment at the breaker. Then disconnect the pump and any wiring. If you’re not sure how the equipment is wired, have an electrician handle the disconnect.

Step 3: Drain the Water the Right Way

Pool water can carry chlorine and other chemicals. Before you drain, check with the City of Caldwell or Burleson County on where you’re allowed to discharge it.

Leftover pool chemicals are banned from the dumpster outright, same as any other chemical. The water itself shouldn’t go in either — it’s a liquid that can leak and carries the same chemical concern.

Step 4: Take It Apart

Pull the liner out and cut it into manageable sections. Unbolt the top rails, uprights, and wall panels so the frame breaks down into flat pieces — disassembled, it’s also easier to haul to a scrap yard. Flat pieces load tighter and leave more room in the container either way.

If there’s an attached deck, pull up the boards and break down the framing the same way.

Step 5: Load It and Schedule Pickup

Mention filter sand when you book — it can add weight fast, and we’ll tell you how to handle it. See our upfront pricing details for how weight factors into your total.

Load the heaviest pieces first and spread them across the floor of the box, then stack the lighter decking and liner pieces on top. If your frame is metal, check with a local scrap yard before it goes in the dumpster — pulling it out first can save container space and put a little money back in your pocket.

The liner, decking, and general teardown debris can go in a roll-off — ask us about the frame if you’re not scrapping it. Chemicals, pool water, and anything hazardous stay out. For the full list, read what you can put in a roll-off dumpster.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size dumpster do I need for an above-ground pool?

Give us the diameter and whether decking's coming out too, and we'll size it from there — it varies too much pool to pool for a one-size chart.

Can pool water or chemicals go in the dumpster?

No. Pool water and pool chemicals stay out of the dumpster. Check with the City of Caldwell or Burleson County before you drain.

Does the frame need to be disassembled first?

It's worth it either way — disassembled, it's easier to haul to a scrap yard, and flat pieces take up less room if it ends up in the container instead.

Do I need to cut power before taking the pool down?

Yes. Turn off power to the pool equipment at the breaker and disconnect the pump before you start.

Can I scrap a metal pool frame?

Check with a local scrap yard — if they'll take it, pulling the metal out first can save space and earn you a little back.
